What new information are you looking for?

Everyone has been affected by stigma.

This is because we are all different and tend to fear being seen as not conforming to the “normal” model. We also tend to measure other people by our own standards of acceptable behaviour.

Two things are true:

  1. Everyone is different
  2. Everyone wants to be treated as an equal

What is needed is information about what we feel and why we want to be accepted by others. We can put across our views in a safe and calm manner. This is called assertiveness.

Many feel that assertiveness is a negative word, but it is really the ability to make our feelings known without damaging ongoing relations with the other party. See: http://www.answers.com/topic/assertiveness-1

People fall into four main behavioural types: Aggressive, Passive Aggressive, Passive and Assertive.

It is important to examine each type of behaviour and recognise which one best describes yourself. After accepting what may even be hard truths about our self we can then learn to develop an assertive behavioural pattern.

Please refer to the book, “Assertiveness – A practical Approach” (you can buy this book from our online shop).

If you have had an experience that was due to stigma but you managed to cope due to being assertive, you can share it with others by posting it on this site.

blurb: “A person communicates assertively by not being afraid to speak his or her mind or trying to influence others, but doing so in a way that respects the personal boundaries of others.” – Source: 11/11/07, http://www.answers.com/topic/assertiveness-1
